Fred

Fred

Hello!

Do you remember the turtles I made for Selfridges’ Project Ocean? I loved making them, and I was thrilled when I was commissioned to make another one. This time it’s a private commission for someone’s turtle loving brother. The turtle has been named Fred!

I’ll miss Frank. He’s made my house look very cheerful. Enjoy your gift, Lee!

These images were created for Illustration Rally’s typography rally. My text , ‘light and colour’, was drawn onto card using Posca markers (my favourite). I then cut out the text and photographed it on various backgrounds (my skirt, the carpet, my duvet cover). Only the second image is heavily Photoshopped (the flowers were added digitally). The other two are simply photos. The effect is quite striking, no?

These images look much better in a larger size – click here to see them on my Facebook page.

Cakey Perry Cootie Catcher

Cakey Perry Cootie Catcher

Have you heard about Cakey Perry yet? If not, click here!

I’m designing the visuals for Cakey Perry, including the menu, and now… a cootie catcher! Remember these things? It took me a while to remember what they were called.

I kept the illustrations consistent with the ones from the menu. (You might also recognise Mister Grumpy Gingerbread Man from the Califoria Gurlz video, which is where the event takes inspiration from.)

There are lots of cheeky fortunes hidden underneath the flaps. They are all Katy Perry themed, of course.

If you want to make one of these yourself, click here. Enjoy!

Before and after

Before and after

Hello! Last year I showed you a painting called ‘Self Portrait with Black Irises’ (see it here). Let’s call that the before picture. You see, every time I attempt to create a simple piece of art, I leave it for a while until I cave and let loose with the embellishment. On that note, here is the after:

See below for close-ups. (Note the giant eyelashes – I guess that’s what I’d look like if I were Lady Gaga.)

What can I say? I’m just a neon-and-rhinestones kind of girl. It’s not a crime.

Alice Cooper and Gory Cupcakes

Alice Cooper and Gory Cupcakes

Apart from the odd bit of profanity (ahem), this is a family friendly website. However, thanks to the Fabulous Miss Cakehead, things are about to get sinister. You see, I am assisting with the art direction for Alice Cooper’s Freakshow auditions in London this month. I am very excited!

We are putting together a freaky, gory (but ultimately delicious) display of cakes on a Silent Hill theme. To get a better idea of what’s going on, make sure to visit Miss Cakehead’s blog, here. In the meantime, here are some sketches from me:

Yes, those are blood-drenched baked goods. Mmm-mmmmm! I am having an unbelieveable amount of fun working on this project. (I guess this is no surprise – my Twitter description simply reads ‘canvas, cameras, and cake’. This event features the holy trinity of my favourite things.) I can’t wait to show you more details and photos. Until then, I’ll give you one last sketch to whet your appetite for the macabre:

(Those are the lyrics to this song.) (Over and out.)

Dino eats Dino

Dino eats Dino

I’ve been messing around with more layered digital imagery since my last post. This one was a bit of a happy accident, and it still makes me giggle when I see it.

The background photo is from an N-Dubz gig I went to along with my boyfriend and his little sister (it was her Christmas present, and it was much more fun than I expected). I scanned one of my Paul Frank Postcards and layered the dinosaur on top. It wasn’t meant to look like Dappy getting eaten, but it just happened! (I find it extra funny because Dappy’s actual dame is CostaDINOS, hence it’s an act of Dino-eats-Dino cannibalism. Ha.)

Snack Time (or, Competition Time)

Snack Time (or, Competition Time)

Hello!

MacWorld and G-Tech are hosting a competition called MacWorld digital Artist of the Year. Now, I don’t know how if I count as a digital pro, but I love playing around with Photoshop and trying new techniques. The end result is a technicolour mash-up of my photos and drawings. What do you think?

You can see all the other entries over here. There’s some really great work, so I’d recommend checking them out.

Tearbursts

Tearbursts

Pattern has always featured heavily in my work, but rarely has it been the focal point. With these two pieces I thought I would try something different…and I quite like how they turned out.

2. Pink/Green Tearburst, Mixed media on canvas, 50x50cm, FOR SALE

Rainforest Rain

Rainforest Rain

Hello.

This is another brand new piece. It is the product of a commission on the (rather nice and wide) theme of ‘plant’. I went for a lush, jungle-esque vibe, complete with lotus flowers, gold leaves and rhinestones. Of course.

'Rainforest Rain', mixed media on canvas, 25 x 35cm, SOLD

Keep in mind that the leaves and raindrops are painted in metallic ink, and reflect beautifully in direct light.

Anyway, I hope you like it.

OK (for sale)

Hey there,

It has been a while, hasn’t it? I’ve been very busy with a new batch of paintings, but also with a new blog featuring my photography. You can find it here.

Now, back to business. This piece is brand new – I just finished it a few minutes ago. It is called OK, and it’s pretty obvious why:

'OK', acrylic paint, marker and rhinestones on canvas, 50 x 50xm

I really like this piece, partly because I got to go crazy with rhinestones, and partly because I got to doodle to my heart’s content:

It features girls, boys, robots, squirrels, insects, cats, birds, and even some amoebae for good measure.

If you’d like to hang this on your wall, all you need to do is drop me an email.

Wrigley

Wrigley

Hello there,

This one’s called Wrigley for more than one reason. 10 points for whoever figures it out.

'Wrigley', approx 50 x 75cm, collage and black marker, not for sale.

Although this particular piece is not for sale, I am currently working on new pieces in a similar style. Email me if you are interested.

Hello there,

does this ring a bell?

helenamaratheftis_rob3

Here’s a hint: It used to look like this -

When I ‘finished’ the latter, I was going on about how is was much simpler than my other pieces but it still worked. LIES. It turns out that I cannot handle minimalism and, unless I’ve plastered my images with aggressive colours and patterns (and rhinestones), I am not happy.

Now I am happy.

The end.

Ruby

Ruby

Hello.

This is Ruby, one of a new series of pieces centred around pattern (and rhinestones, for that matter).

My favourite thing about Ruby is the way the colours change, depending on the light. This is due to the heavy use of metallics and glossy paints.

This would look great against a blue or yellow toned wall. Think about it!

Why, hello there.

For the last couple of months I have been working on multiple pieces simultaneously…but have been failing to finish any of them. UNTIL NOW. This particular piece has been hanging around for 8 months or so, and it was so satisfying to finally complete it. I hope you like it.

I really had fun with this one, mainly because I’m slightly obsessed with glitter and anything shiny. (Sadly, this makes photography quite difficult. Keep in mind that the yellow/brownish bits are gold.)

See what I mean?

This piece is for sale. If you are interested, just get in touch.

Ms. Winehouse

Ms. Winehouse

Hello.

I made this for a good friend’s birthday. We love Amy.

'Amy' (birthday card), felt tip marker and collage on postcard, A5

The pink background is actually a pre-bought metallic postcard from Paperchase. I also love Paperchase. If you’re in London I’d seriously recommend the 3 storey megastore on Tottenham Court Rd. It is what dreams are made of.

UPDATE: RIP Amy. I’m so sad.
