Retroviral is a collection of Fine Bone China mugs featuring striking renderings of the microscopic structure of viruses: HIV, Herpes Simplex (HSV-1), Influenza, Measles, Rabies and Smallpox. The virus drawings by Helena Maratheftis are based on Electron Microscope imagery, while the retro stylings of the mugs riff on vintage textiles.
Retroviral makes you look twice – first at the boldly patterned design, and then again when you realise what you’re seeing! The collection is an artist’s spin on scientific information, designed for science geeks and design nerds alike.
The mugs were designed in London and are hand decorated in the “potteries” of Stoke-on-Trent, using traditional silk screen techniques. They and are microwave and dishwasher safe.
